Amarbayasgalant monastery

One of the most architecturally magnificent religious complexes in all of Central Asia, Amarbayasgalant was built in 1727–1737 in honour of Zanabazar — Mongolia's greatest spiritual leader and sculptor. Set in the Iven River valley at the foot of sacred Burenkhan Mountain, it is a UNESCO World Heritage nominee that survived the Soviet purges better than almost any other monastery in Mongolia.

08:15  Arrive in Erdenet. Breakfast at a local café.

Morning  Drive north to Amarbayasgalant Monastery — a two-hour journey through increasingly remote and beautiful mountain valley country. Guided tour of the 28 surviving temple structures, the active monks' community, and the extraordinary Sino-Mongolian architectural details of this 300-year-old complex.

Afternoon  Check into the ger camp directly adjacent to the monastery. The valley here — watered by the Iven River and thick with ancient Mongolian cherry groves — has been considered sacred for over 1,500 years.
